What We Got Wrong About the Stanford Prison Experiment

Have we completely misunderstood two of psychology’s most famous experiments? The Stanford Prison Experiment and the Robbers Cave experiment have changed how generations of people understand and study human behavior, group conflict, authority, and power dynamics in social situations. For years, we accepted their results without question, but recently, researchers digging through the archives have uncovered a much messier story.

We’re joined by science historians Thibault Le Texier and Gina Perry on this unconventional episode to examine the behind-the-scenes manipulations that took place during these experiments, from using previous experiments to orchestrate behaviors to knowingly creating hostility among groups. Le Texier and Perry reveal some shocking details about the not-so-noble intentions behind the experiments we learned about in school.

So, what does this reveal about behavioral science? What does it say about our desire to have a “neat and clean” experiment? And what happens when researchers become more invested in reaching a specific conclusion than challenging their assumptions? The lessons may reveal less about the cruel and competitive nature of humanity and more about how leadership, expectations, and social pressure shape the stories we tell about science itself.
