Why the Gender Revolution Stopped Halfway | Corinne Low

What if the gender revolution never finished? This week, economist Corrine Low holds a mirror up to us, asking us to examine our own roles in household inequality. Corrine argues that while women have transformed the workforce, men’s roles at home have barely budged.  Drawing on the data and research that went into her new book, Having It All, Corinne shows us all the ways modern families are feeling overextended and why so many of us aren’t “having it all” but “having it almost”.

In our chat, Corinne helps us to understand the behavioral and economic forces behind today’s family imbalance.  We explore interesting data that reveals some surprising truths: mothers are spending twice as much time with kids as they did a generation ago, but men’s household contributions have pretty much stayed the same since 1970.  Pressures from the “rugrat race” and the hidden cost of household labor often contribute to a toxic situation where rational choices, social pressure, and outdated norms collide.

We also discuss how to create a smarter equilibrium at home and at work.  Data-backed ideas for structural reform, such as parental leave and more precise job boundaries, do exist and offer practical tools and solutions families can use right now. If you’re a parent, partner, or leader sick of having it almost, this episode provides an honest, data-driven look at gender roles, fairness, and what absolute equality might look like. This is not just a conversation, but a deep dive into the facts and figures that shape our lives.
